When I am determined I will stop at nothing. This lovely little project took me over a month to finish. I spent more hours and time and worry on this then I have ever spent on any one project in my LIFE! I have refinished furniture before and haven't always been 100% excited about the final product but I've never disliked something so much that I did it over and over and over and OVER again before I got it right. Perhaps this just means I'm an amateur at refinishing furniture, who knows. I'll just pretend it's because I'm awesome :)
Ok so here is the story, the shortened version. First I sanded down the dresser, then I used a stain called ployshades made by minwax. The idea of the stain is awesome! It is meant to be used to stain wood that is not real wood. I wanted my dresser and crib to be exactly the same color. Red mahogany. However, the polyshades didn't cooperate with me at all. It wouldn't go on evenly no matter how hard I tried. So I spray painted it to give it an even coat, then tried to put the polyshades again. Didn't work! Gave up! Decided to spray paint it again. This time I did it white and wanted to antique it. White looked TERRIBLE in the room and I used brown antique which made this poor furniture look dirty and did NOTHING for the room. I went back to the drawing board and decided on Grey. LOVELY idea, it worked perfect! So, grey it is!! I put a navy blue boarder around each drawer and the door and put one of the New York Yankee logos on the door. LOVE IT!!! I still have touch up to do and I want to put New York on the top board that goes across the top of the dresser but we will see. I couldn't wait to post it and figured you'll see it 100% complete when it is in the baby's room. So here it is...
Changing table/ dresser
Before: (the before also had wooden knobs on it, but I took those off. SORRY!!)
somewhat After:
Perhaps if the room wasn't so small and I antiqued the thing with black instead of brown it would have looked awesome in the room. I think my idea is still cool and would like to try it again, someday. When I do I will have learned a few good things about painting furniture white. First, NEVER buy the inexpensive crap because it doesn't cover well, even after several coats. Second, unless there are some pretty awesome dings or there is a cool pattern on the furniture or anything to show the antiquing more don't antique white with brown, it only makes the it look dirty. (Yes it is antiqued in the picture but this picture is doing the white justice, it actually makes me wonder why I thought it looked so bad, but it did) Third, be patient!
I guess one of the reasons this looked bad in the room is because the room is so small the white just blended in and didn't add anything to it. I suppose if the room were bigger and I was able to put more things in to add some color I would have liked the white and wouldn't have redone the gray!
AND the real AFTER:
(this isn't really finsished. I have to finish touch ups and actually put the Yankee logo on but you get the idea of what it is going to look like AND you will see it all done when I post pictures of the finished baby's room. I can't WAIT for that to be finished! (The knobs are baseballs that I got from Hobby Lobby! LOVE them!)
I only can find pictures of when I did the dresser white (and obviously finished) I can't find the picture of the other 2 times I practically finished the thing and how AWFUL it looked, it was bad and anyone would have agreed!
Thankful it is practically finished! Don't look to hard or you'll see all the imperfections (still touch up to do) and because of all the times I had to redo the thing there are many imperfections. I just wish I would have done the thing this color first. Darn, oh well!
